A Devastating Shift a Single Year Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was completely separate. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful Americans could admit America's serious imperfections – its inequities and inequality – however they could still perceive it as the US. A free society. A place where legal governance carried weight. A state led by a dignified and upright leader, even with his older age and declining health.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, numerous citizens barely recognize the country we live in. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and forced into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition for an obscene ballroom. The president is targeting his opponents or alleged foes and requesting federal prosecutors transfer a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has – in effect – rid itself of routine media oversight as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are regarded as aristocracy.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the limit into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, commented recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it transpired in this country.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. It is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his profoundly alarming previous administration and following the alerts that came with the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – following Trump himself said publicly he would rule as a tyrant just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to understand that we have only been several months into this presidential term. What will three more years of this decline find us? And suppose the three years transforms into something even longer, since there is nobody to limit this president from opting that another term is necessary, perhaps for security concerns?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. We will have congressional elections in 2026 that could create a new political equilibrium, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of parliament. There exist elected officials who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, for example representatives that are starting a probe regarding the effort to cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a presidential election three years from now could begin our journey to recovery precisely as the prior selection placed us on this unfortunate course.

There are millions of Americans marching in urban areas of their cities, similar to recent last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the US is rising”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or during the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.

During those times, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

He claims he recognizes the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding currently. As evidence, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, bipartisan pushback to a television host's removal and the near-unanimous defiance by media to agree to military mandates they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep until certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of societal benefit, certain violence so noisy, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will be validated.

In the meantime, the major inquiries endure: will the nation return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its status globally and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My pessimistic brain tells me that the latter is true; that everything could be gone. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we must try, through all methods available.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about pushing media professionals to live up, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to safeguard ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we existed in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we are uncertain. All we can do is to strive to persevere.
