"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But the band will always be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
