Gas Detonation Claims Three Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Procedure in Italy
A trio of officers perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the explosion was found shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a level above the entrance and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
