Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
